Good morning, Modesto. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 12th of August.
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On June 14th, 2025, Modesto officials and MPD kept protests safe and arrested five people for breaking a rule on face coverings - the City Attorney’s Office later did not file charges to support law education and let the Community Police Review Board review the ordinance. This move aims to boost public understanding of local safety rules. City of Modesto
- ➤ Stanislaus County’s commission approved Oakdale’s plan to annex 300 acres on the city’s southwest side, a move that could add almost 900 homes, more than 1 million square feet of shops and offices, and about 2,500 new residents. The annexation is not final as a 30-day reconsideration period will be followed by a protest hearing—neighbors and Councilman Jarod Pitassi raised concerns about traffic and livestock conflicts—while the developer said that existing home irrigation will remain unchanged. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A study from UC Riverside found that sinking ground caused by excessive groundwater pumping lowered home values with losses ranging from $6,689 to $16,165 per home in Central Valley (2015–2021). Professor Mehdi Nemati said the study, which analyzed nearly 200,000 home sales (across eight counties), indicated that the issue might lead to further local economic challenges. CBS Sacramento
